8.8 km of 2.5 m diameter HDPE pipes for power plant project in Ghana
- Contract worth approx. 20 million Euro
- Pipelife is the worldwide leader in the production of large diameter HDPE pipes
Pipelife, the plastic pipe producer acquired by Wienerberger in May 2012, finalized the second-largest contract in its history this week. After signing a contract this spring for the delivery of 23 kilometers of plastic pipes to Morocco, the company will now supply approx. 20 million Euro of plastic pipes for the cooling water circuit at a power plant in Ghana. This contract not only sets a record for volume - with a diameter of 2.5 meters and a length of 600 meters, these pipes represent the largest extruded plastic pipes (high-density polyethylene, HDPE) produced anywhere in the world to date. The pipes are scheduled for delivery to the West African country of Ghana by August 2013.
Delivery of 8.8 kilometers of plastic pipes to Ghana
This 20 million Euro deal covers the delivery of 8.8 kilometers of plastic pipes with a diameter of 2.5 meters. The investor behind the power plant project is Takoradi International Company, the Ghanaian branch of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC ("TAQA"). Pipelife's direct business partner is the Korean general contractor Kepco E&C Inc. "This contract represents a milestone, not only because of its volume but also because of its strategic importance. With its success on this global tender, Wienerberger's subsidiary Pipelife has also demonstrated its innovation leadership", explained Wienerberger CEO Heimo Scheuch.
Pipes to be manufactured in Norway on recently completed production line
Pipelife took an important step to meet an emerging global trend with the construction of a production line for particularly long, large diameter pipes (LLLD - Long Length Large Diameter HDPE Pipes) at its plant in Stathelle, Norway. These oversized pipes for industrial facilities are the focus of increasing global demand. The production line started operations on
February 14, 2012 and makes Pipelife the only producer in the world that can manufacture HDPE pipes with a diameter of up to 2.5 m and a length of up to 600 meters. To date the plant has produced 2.1 m diameter plastic pipes for a Moroccan project, and this latest order for pipes with a diameter of 2.5 meters represents the first for the recently expanded Stathelle plant.
Major order confirms Wienerberger investment in Pipelife
In addition to Steinzeug-Keramo, the ceramic pipe specialist, and Semmelrock, the leading concrete paver producer in Central-East Europe, Pipelife represents a key strategic investment by Wienerberger to position itself as a system provider over the long-term. "This makes us less dependent on the highly volatile new construction sector - this latest major order confirms our strategic course", added Scheuch.
Wienerberger with leading positions in bricks, roof tiles, concrete pavers and pipe systems
Wienerberger is the world's largest producer of bricks (Porotherm, Terca) and the market leader for clay roof tiles (Koramic, Tondach) in Europe and for concrete pavers (Semmelrock) in Central-East Europa. In pipe systems (Steinzeug-Keramo ceramic pipes and Pipelife plastic pipes), the company is one of the leading suppliers in Europe. In 2011 the Wienerberger Group generated revenues of 2,024 million Euro and operating EBITDA of 259 million Euro with 230 plants.
Pipelife: leading producer of plastic pipe systems in Europe
Pipelife is one of the leading European producers of high-quality plastic pipes, pipe systems and fittings. The company operates 27 plants in Europe and the USA with 2,650 employees in 27 countries. The most important regions are Northern Europe, Benelux, France and Austria. The Pipelife product portfolio includes system solutions for sewage and rainwater management systems, building installations, drinking water supply, irrigation, energy supply and drainage as well as special products for industrial applications. Similar to Wienerberger, Pipelife also places a strong focus on the improvement and innovation of its product portfolio. In 2011, 20% of the company's sales volumes represented products that were developed and launched during the past five years. Wienerberger completed the full takeover of Pipelife at the end of May 2012 and thereby also took an important step to expand its offering.
