POLYTEC and AUDI AG receive prestigious JEC Innovation Award for product development

JEC World is the global trade show for composites and their applications and will take place in Paris (F) in April 2023. In the forefront, each year the JEC Group honours innovative and creative projects that exploit the full potential of composites with the prestigious JEC Innovation Awards.
This year, AUDI AG and POLYTEC GROUP jointly received the JEC Innovation Award in the category "AUTOMOTIVE & ROAD TRANSPORTATION - PROCESS".
With the battery underride protection for the Audi Q8 e-tron, the POLYTEC SOLUTION FORCE, in cooperation with AUDI, has achieved a pioneering achievement for forward-looking lightweight solutions in the field of electromobility. The innovative component combines optimum stability and high bending stiffness with cost-effective series production and thus differentiates itself from previously used technologies.
An active contribution to sustainable mobility
This underbody solution protects the high-voltage battery from mechanical impacts that occur close to the ground and is thus partly responsible for the longevity of the vehicle. Moreover, the new underride protection made of plastic composite material is about a quarter lighter than the previous aluminium version. The weight reduction leads to increased efficiency of the electric vehicle.
Another important premise during the development phase was the recyclability of the component, which is ensured by the use of thermoplastic material. This means that the part can be returned to the material cycle at the end of its functional life and the consumption of fossil resources can be reduced. Last but not least, the highly efficient one-shot production process with only one tool leads to a significant reduction in climate-relevant emissions.
The sum of these outstanding product advantages also convinced the international jury of experts. On 2 March, the winners were announced at a festive award ceremony in Paris.
