  • Important milestone for the introduction of future digital broadband communications for authorities and organisations with security tasks (BOS)
  • This is based on the 3GPP-standardised Mission Critical Services (MCX) implemented by Frequentis
  • Testing of a research object from Frequentis from the KoPa_45 project

Frequentis has become the first company in Germany to implement the prioritised transmission of safety-critical operational communications of authorities and organisations with security tasks (BOS) in a public MCX-ready mobile network. This innovative solution was developed in collaboration with Vodafone and presented for the first time on 2/3 April at the trade fair GPEC digital 2025 (General Police Equipment Exhibition & Conference) in Leipzig.

In future, the current BOS digital radio will be replaced by broadband communication based on 4G/5G mobile technology. To reach this goal quickly and cost-effectively, Frequentis has developed the concept "The smart way", which includes the use of the existing public mobile networks. To meet the high safety and mission-critical requirements for BOS communications, the prioritisation that has now been developed is an essential prerequisite. The priority of the BOS in mobile networks is stored on the SIM cards of their smartphones, and prioritisation takes place via a jointly implemented standardised 3GPP* interface from Frequentis and Vodafone. The MCX-ready mobile app from Frequentis ensures that priority and non-priority communications are kept separate.

The BDBOS (Federal Agency for Public Safety Digital Radio) supports this research project as part of the KoPa_45 funding from the German Ministry of the Interior and Community which promotes groundbreaking technological standards in mission-critical broadband communications.

"The implementation of this technological development once again demonstrates Frequentis' innovative capability and the resulting success. In this way, we are supporting the future-proof sovereignty of the communication and operational capability of authorities and organisations with security tasks decided by the BDBOS," says Marcel Haar, Managing Director Frequentis Germany.

"Cooperations with partners like Frequentis form the basis for the digitalisation of tomorrow. On the one hand, they help realising new digital solutions for society and the economy, such as the prioritisation in the network. They are also essential for a practical orientation so that digital solutions can be used flawlessly in everyday life and deliver tangible added value. This makes Germany even more fit for the future," states Michael Jacob Reinartz, Director Innovation Vodafone Germany.

About MCX

With the introduction of LTE/4G, the 4th generation of mobile communications, and the publication of the "Mission Critical Services" standard extension, 3GPP* standard-compliant "mission-critical services" (voice, data, video + management) can be developed for the first time by application manufacturers and integrated into public as well as dedicated 4G/5G mobile networks. The Mission Critical Services (MCX) defined in the 3GPP standard form the basis for the development and deployment of mission-critical services that can be used independently of manufacturers and across borders on the basis of standardised 4G and 5G networks. Frequentis is involved in the development, production, and provision of all services for mission-critical services based on MCX services.
