Enormous damage and tragedies after disastrous flooding in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia
- Wienerberger Group provides fast and unbureaucratic assistance for flood victims with building materials for 50 new homes
- Building materials include clay blocks, clay roof tiles and plastic pipes to rebuild destroyed structures
Over three million people in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia have been affected by the worst flooding in more than 100 years. The tense situation in the flooded regions in Southeastern Europe is now easing slowly, but further storms in parts of Bosnia and Serbia represent a further risk. In any event, what remains are mud and destroyed houses - and many residents who have lost their homes through this disaster. The EBRD (European Bank for Reconstruction and Development) estimates the damage caused by the flooding at roughly EUR 3 billion.
Reconstruction can start
In the crisis regions, the cleanup and reconstruction can now begin. In order to help the flood victims in this region rebuild as quickly as possible, the Wienerberger Group is providing fast assistance in the form of building material packages for 50 houses. These packages include high-quality clay blocks, clay roof tiles and plastic pipes. The bricks for the walls come from a local Wienerberger plant. Tondach Gleinstätten is supplying the products for the roof with sustainable clay roof tiles from its local production. The package also includes the necessary plastic pipes for water supply and wastewater disposal for 50 houses, which are provided by Wienerberger's subsidiary Pipelife. The Wienerberger building material packages will be transferred to local aid organizations (Housing Centre of Serbia, Caritas for Bosnia and Red Cross Croatia) to ensure efficient assistance for the people in the greatest need.
Distribution via local aid organizations for fast reconstruction
Heimo Scheuch, Chief Executive Officer of Wienerberger AG, was shocked and saddened over the extent of the flood damage: "My sympathy goes out to the people of this region in this difficult situation. Support for the victims of the disaster has top priority for us. As an international building materials company, our responsibility is to provide swift and unbureaucratic held after disasters of this type. We are therefore donating building materials for the reconstruction of roughly 50 houses to the flood victims in the region. The materials are already on their way to local aid organizations, which will ensure fast and effective distribution. We are pleased to make a small contribution to rebuilding local structures with our large range of products. I hope the families will be able to quickly rebuild their homes and regain a sense of security", added Heimo Scheuch in conclusion.
