A new high-speed era is starting for data networks. IEEE, the international standards institute, has now ratified the 10 Gigabit Ethernet transmission standard via copper cabling. A LAN that meets the requirements of the new IEEE 802.3an standard can be operated with ten times greater bandwidth than the maximum previously possible. Reichle & De-Massari (R&M, www.rdm.com ), the Swiss cabling specialist emphasizes: "An infrastructure of high-quality components is required".

Since the market introduction in 2000, R&M's STAR Real10 product range has supported the now standardized requirements for 10GBASE-T, the top class of data transmission via copper, making them pioneers in the market. R&M guarantees 10 Gigabit Ethernet transmission over a distance of a full 100 meters of horizontal cabling. The product range comprises five different channel types, giving end users full flexibility and choice. Worldwide, more than 3.5 million channels with the shielded R&M solution have been installed in enterprise networks. Without any additional cabling investment, these users can upgrade to 10 Gigabit Ethernet, enabling not only the realization of enormous speed increases but also the integration of many new applications into their LAN.

The 3P independent test laboratory also certifies cabling links for network operation with 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Products from the Real10 product range were tested according to the latest criteria and based on these tests, 3P has already certified four different channel configurations. Thus, R&M considers itself confirmed as the quality market leader in passive network technology.

The channels - "Screened Four Connector Channels" - according to 3P meet the parameters of the future Class EA. 3P performed the tests based on the third IEEE 802.3an draft. In addition, 3P carried out its tests according to the current criteria in the draft standards for structured cabling: Amendment 1 of the second version of ISO/IEC 11801 (Draft N 1096) edition, Amendment 1 of the EN 50173-1 (Draft 2005-09-04) and TIA/EIA-568-B.2-10 (Draft 3.0).

The new transmission standard requires outstanding cabling system quality due to the sensitive high-frequency technology with 500 MHz bandwidth. The components must be constructed in such a way that they effectively protect against interferences from outside the cabling. Therefore, R&M pays special attention to the connection modules. The shielded RJ45 Cat. 6 components are individually encased with a closed metal hood. Error-free installation is facilitated with an automatic shield and ground contacting. Tin-coated insulation displacement connections provide for long-term contacting of the copper conductors. Additional factors for transmission quality are the gold coating of the plug-in contacts as well as a combination of capacitive and inductive compensation. R&M also pays close attention to absolute quality in the manufacturing process at the Swiss production site. R&M is the only manufacturer worldwide, who tests each Cat. 6 module for all critical transmission values during assembly.
