* Delivery of a nationwide system to manage unmanned aircraft systems in Norway
* Involvement in EU and German research projects
* Leading role in the Austrian drone project AIRlabs Austria GmbH
Norway has a reputation as a highly progressive country with innovative technology. In 2018 the Norwegian government complied an extensive strategy for the efficient and safe use of drones to meet commercial and social needs, including under special circumstances. The Norwegian air traffic control organisation Avinor ANS, which has over 1,000 employees, is responsible for all air traffic control services and for providing the necessary technical infrastructure in Norway. Following a competitive tender process, it awarded Frequentis AG (ISIN: ATFREQUENT09), a leading international supplier of communication and information solutions for control centres with safety-critical tasks, the order for its first Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) solution.
Together with its British partner, Altitude Angel, Frequentis will be delivering a UTM system that will enable Avinor to start integrating drones safely into the controlled airspace at 18 airports in Norway. A broad range of applications is envisaged - from search and rescue to support for the emergency services and parcel delivery services.
Frequentis' CEO Norbert Haslacher stresses the importance of this order for the company: "We are proud to have been selected to help air traffic control in Norway integrate drones safely and efficiently into Norwegian airspace. As a recognised innovation leader in information systems for safety-critical applications, our strategic goal is to make new technologies available for use as quickly as possible. This order confirms our leading position in the field of drone management."
During the three-year contract, which includes further extension opportunities, Frequentis and Altitude Angel will deliver a full UTM solution. The products and services comprise a high-quality Flight Information Management System as the central platform for data interchange, as well as a drone registration system and web and mobile flight planning application. This scalable solution will form the basis for safe integration of unmanned aircraft systems into Norwegian airspace.
A leader in drone management research as well
Frequentis also demonstrates its extensive expertise and innovative capability in a range of national and international research projects.
In July and August 2018, the European research project SESAR GOF U-space, which focuses on the safe and environmentally-friendly operation of drones in low-level airspace, held extensive tests in Meerbusen (Gulf of Finland, GOF) to validate the commercial use of drones and integrate unmanned aircraft into shared airspace. Additionally, the Frequentis Group is involved in the FALKE project in Germany, which is developing a drone detection system with proven capability for use in a civilian airport environment.
In Austria, Frequentis is adopting a leading role in AIRlabs Austria GmbH, which is setting up international test areas for unmanned aircraft and manned passenger drones. Moreover, Frequentis is involved in the "Drone Risk Austria" project of Kärnten University of Applied Sciences. Together with the Austrian air traffic controller, Austro Control, and the UBIMET meteorological service, this project is developing a tool to assess the risk of drone flights.
