Solo exhibition of Finnish artist Ulla Karttunen in Rome
Ulla Karttunen's magnificent artwork can be seen this June and July at the Museo Crocetti in Rome
Rome/Zurich (ptp016/02.07.2019/14:20) The prestigious Roman museum Museo Crocetti is at the moment presenting Finnish artworks, of which many have never been shown before in public. Around 30 artworks and installations of the Finnish-based artist Ulla Karttunen are exhibited from 28th June to 11th July 2019 in a large solo exhibition. The curator of the exhibition, Sveva Manfredi Zavaglia, sees Ulla Karttunen's works as "photographic poetry", regarding her as one of the leading figures of transdisciplinary Avantgarde artists - an artist, who can combine in her style contradictory elements, having "sensual, satirical and irrational touch".
In her artistic work, Ulla Karttunen mainly devotes herself to digital art and installations, as well as conceptual and socially critical projects. Over the years, she has created her unique style by developing digitality into a special art technique: She combines different manual means from drawing and tearing into various digital methods. Many of her materials can be found in banal everyday life: She constructs sculptures out of toilet paper or makes portraits of saints from media scrap and paints them with nail polish, jam or ketchup. The banal materials reflect her interest in those who have been excluded from society; inequality and gender, exclusion and power, the surrealist excess of market society, have been Karttunen's basic themes. Although Karttunen's art addresses socially critical issues, critics have especially praised her avantgardistic touch and the mythogical deepness.
The theme of the exhibition in Rome, Donna Fatale, translates to fatal woman. But instead of film noir's glamorous seducers, the exhibition is more about equality as a globally fatal question. In a global perspective, women's freedom reflects the degree of the development of society. Questions about women's right to self-determination and education are related to even more fatal questions about population growth and planet's ecological future. The works reflect the female strength and courage, but also the reverse side: violence, silencing, infringing on human dignity, or taking women as bunny mascots for speeding up business. Also the Western culture, so proud of its development of democracy and equality, has lately witnessed widespread abuse of power, which was hidden until the #metoo movement.
The exhibition "Donna Fatale: Metamorphoses of the Modern" is taking place from 28th June to 11th July 2019 at the museum Museo Crocetti (Via Cassia 492, Rome).
After her stop in Italy, Ulla Karttunen will display her artwork "The eye of the letter" digitally at the SWISSARTEXPO in Zurich. The art festival, which is expected to attract around 400,000 visitors, will take place from 15th to 19th August 2019 in Zurich's Central Station Hall.
